Bowie Horse Crossing Covered Bridge sits high above Race Track Road in Bowie, Maryland. Bowie Racetrack, also known as Bowie Racecourse was closed in July 1985. The facility was converted to a horse training center. Traffic was often halted on Race Track Road while horses walked from their stables on one side of road to the other side to reach the racetrack. In 1989, a covered bridge was built for the safety of the horses as well as to improve traffic flow. At 113 feet it is the longest Romantic Shelter in Maryland. Photos taken 2008. |
